For the most part, it was all smooth sailing. Their first victory had been the phone call home to announce her âpregnancy.â And the call had been made a week and a half after arriving in DC. Cristina called her mother and told her âthe great news.â She was five months pregnant and had never even known about it. Before the call, Cristina had worried about Beatriz asking a hundred questions. Cristina was terrified of hyperventilating on the phone, and feared that, like a guilty child, she would just blurt out the truth. But Leo and Isa had assured her that all would go well, reminding her that there was no reason why her parents would doubt the story. What kind of parents would ask or even think that their daughter was making up a pregnancy? In fact, when Cristina did make the call, while holding Leoâs hand, it had been rather anti-climactic.
âHijaaaaaaaa!â Beatriz had cried.
âAma, can you believe it?â
âClaro que si! Ya vez, God was looking after you. Waiting to bless you with such good news after so much trajedia.â
Just like that. Beatriz even insisted that part of her had seen the changes in Cristinaâs body.
âYour hips seemed wider! Youâd been eating more.â
Oh, the wonderful things that the mind can make up when it sees what it wants to see. After Cristina had talked to her father, she had passed the phone on to Leo and then Isa. And it was hearing Isa talk about being an aunt again that made Cristina feel the first twinges of guilt. There was her sister, half-full with child, pretending like she wasnât. When Beatriz asked the inevitableââSo, are you coming home now?ââLeo very calmly told her, in as soothing and nonchalant tones as he could muster, âThe doctor doesnât want her traveling, given her previous problems. Weâre going to have the baby here and go home as soon as the pediatrician allows it.â Both Cristina and Isa gave him a thumbs up.
